Let's now look at some words and phrases that are useful when discussing budget plans and finances at work. We'll learn things like: Combien cela va-t-il coûter ? (What is this going to cost?) On nous a accordé un plus gros budget. (We've been given a bigger budget.) On a un budget serré pour ça. (We have a tight budget for this.)

There are a number of expressions that contain the word "budget", and these combinations crop up often in conversation. Here are some examples. la réduction budgétaire (budget cut) hors budget (over budget) en-dessous du budget (under budget) respecter la limite budgétaire (to keep within budget)

Sandra: We estimate £8,000.

Hugo: As-tu laissé une marge lorsque tu as calculé son coût ?

Hugo: Did you leave a margin when you costed this?

Sandra: Oui. Donc 8 000 £ est une estimation généreuse. Je suis persuadée que nous allons rester en-dessous du budget.

Sandra: Yeah. So, £8,000 is a generous estimate. I'm confident that we'll stay under budget.

Hugo: D'accord, c’est bien. Mais fais bien attention de ne pas dépasser ce chiffre quand même. Nous avons un budget serré cette année.

Hugo: OK, that's good. Please be careful not to go over that figure, though. We have a tight budget this year.
