Now let's look at some words and phrases that are useful when discussing difficult topics with your manager and resolving conflict. We'll learn things like: Je ne suis pas/ je n'étais pas d'accord avec... (I don't / didn't agree with...) J'espérais pouvoir vous parler d'une révision de salaire. (I was hoping I could talk to you about a salary review.) Le budget est problématique. (The budget is causing a problem.)

When you want to discuss an increase in your salary, it should exclusively be done during a one-to-one annual review meeting with your manager. Make sure you are well prepared! At work, talking about money and your salary remains a taboo in France. There is a general disapproval of anyone who openly shows or flaunts wealth. You shouldn’t ask how much money your colleagues make or disclose what you earn, otherwise it may cause tension.
