Here's a tip

Let's learn some more ways of asking others about their work and how to reply to questions like: Est-ce que ton travail te plaît ? (Do you like your job?) Dans quel service travailles-tu ? (Which department do you work in?) Sur quoi travailles-tu en ce moment ? (What are you working on at the moment?)

When we ask a colleague "Qu'est-ce que tu fais comme travail?" (What's your job?), that person will usually describe their role in a company. If you want to ask more specifically about their job title, you would ask "Quel est l'intitulé de ton poste?" (What's your job title?). Qu'est-ce que tu fais comme travail ? - Je fais partie de l’équipe du Service clients. Je réponds aux questions des clients et gère les plaintes. (I'm part of the Customer Service team. I answer customer questions and deal with complaints.) Quel est l'intitulé de ton poste? - Je suis agent supérieur du Service clients. (I'm a Senior Customer Service Agent.)

People often enjoy talking about what they're currently working on. We might work on a presentation or a project. Here are some examples. Nous travaillons sur une nouvelle campagne marketing de grande envergure. (We're working on a big new marketing campaign at the moment.) Elle travaille sur une présentation pour un discours qu’elle prononcera à une conférence. (She's working on a presentation for a talk she's giving at a conference.)

Here are some responses we might hear when asking someone if they enjoy their job. Oui je l’adore. Je le trouve très intéressant et j’ai toujours plein de défis à relever. (Yes, I love it. I find it really interesting, and I'm always being challenged.) Oui, ça va, même si c’est parfois répétitif. (Yes, it's ok, although sometimes it can get repetitive.)

Lorenzo: So what do you do? Which department do you work in?

Amelia: Je suis dans le service Marketing. Je suis responsable de nos pages sur les réseaux sociaux.

Amelia: I'm in the Marketing department. I'm responsible for our social media pages.

Lorenzo: Super. Travailles-tu à temps plein ?

Lorenzo: Cool. Do you work full-time?

Amelia: Non, en fait je travaille à temps partiel. Je ne suis au bureau que les lundis, mardis et jeudis.

Amelia: No, actually I'm part-time. I'm only in the office Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Lorenzo: Oh cool. Do you like your job?

Amelia: Oui, je l’adore. Et c’est génial qu’il soit flexible car je dois m’occuper de mes deux enfants.

Amelia: Yes, I love it. And it's great that it's flexible, because I have two children to look after.

Lorenzo: Ah je vois. Est-ce stressant ?

Lorenzo: Wow. Is it stressful?

Amelia: Le travail ou le fait d’avoir des enfants ? Les deux peuvent l’être parfois !
